On the 14th October 2025, Windows 10 stopped receiving security updates. Over time, this will make your computer increasingly vulnerable to malware. The table below summarises alternative operating systems that you could use:

Windows 10 Extended Security Updates
Consumers can get an extra year of updates for free using these instructions. If the link to enable extended updates is not visible, try this. This option gives you the familiarity of Windows 10 and is compatible with your favourite software. The drawback is that extended updates will end on 13/10/26 and your computer will be at risk.
Forced Windows 11 update
It is possible to force a Windows 11 update on ‘incompatible’ hardware. Most computers made since 2010 will still work with Windows 11. This is relatively familiar and compatible with your favourite software. The drawback is that annual feature updates require either a full reinstall or some tinkering.

ChromeOS Flex
You can effectively turn your existing computer into a Chromebook for free by installing ChromeOS Flex. This is very fast and secure but restricts the functions of your computer. Many people can do everything they need in Chrome with Google Drive, but this won’t be an option if you need specific software. How to install.
You can also install Linux apps through a virtual machine, though this has some limitations.
GNU/Linux
Linux-based operating systems are alternatives to Windows. You also have the option of installing both at the same time and being able to swap between them.
Linux distributions (different ‘types’) are usually free, generally faster than Windows and have much less risk of being infected by viruses. There is no ‘end of support date’, you can continue using it until your chosen distribution of Linux is no longer compatible with your PC, which is likely to be a matter of decades. While Linux may not be compatible with all your preferred Windows software, alternatives are available for most people’s needs. Find out more here.
